MLM Mindset: Don’t Allow ANYONE To Crush Your Spirit
"MLM Mindset"
Last night my boyfriend and I went to see a movie called “Horrible Bosses.” Now if you’re reading this post and you haven’t seen the movie yet, don’t worry, I wont spoil it for you. That being said, the movie reminded me of something really important that I think a lot of people kind of ‘miss’ as they’re getting started in building their network marketing business. It's called 'MLM Mindset...'
Right in the beginning of the movie, one of the corporate executives says this: “The key to success is taking shit” (from your boss). The audience burst into laughter – but I kind of sat there thinking – 'wow, it’s not THAT funny, because unfortunately most people really believe that ‘taking shit’ IS their passport to success.'
If they stay late at work to show their boss they’re ‘committed,’ or they apologize 25 times for being 3 minutes late on a rainy day, or they work on the weekend to cover the work that their supervisor was supposed to finish during the week.... If they just take all this ‘shit’ – then ONE day – they’ll have it all, one day they’ll have the job of their boss, one day they’ll get to work double the hours to make 10% more then they’re making right now. Lol.
Here’s my point: this pattern of beliefs for a network marketer can be debilitating. Now, most people in the network marketing industry realize that they want to stop taking shit – however, the mental shift that people need to go through can be cumbersome for a lot of people. And, mentally, they’re still kind of thinking with this ‘employee’ mindset.
I kind of got lucky here in that I was kind of ‘forced’ out of the employee mindset: I had one corporate job, ever, in my whole life. It was an AWESOME cushy job with an amazing boss that would have done anything for me. I got make my own schedule, travel, and rack up 172,000 American Express points that I actually still have, even though I never use the card anymore, and haven’t worked for this company for 5 years. I had a full expense account and had freedom to stay at 4 and 5 star resorts all over the country on the company’s dime, training sales managers on how to sell the product that this company manufactured. It was an EASY job that paid a LOT of money for a gal that had just turned 20 years old. If the company didn’t go into cutbacks and lay off the entire sales team (myself included) – I would have never become an entrepreneur; I’m sure of it. (That’s how much I loved this job)...
So we were all given 3 months severance pay, (I know, awesome deal)…and during 2 of those 3 months I went on job interviews literally all day every day. I had really good experience so getting interviews and getting job offerings was a piece of cake. What was NOT a piece of cake however was finding something even remotely close to what I had before. Every place I went and interviewed wanted to pay me ½ my old salary, wouldn’t let me make my own schedule, and di
dn’t come close to the benefits that I had at my previous job.
I had the luxury of knowing that my time was worth more than that, and my skills were worth more than that – and that was what drove me into entrepreneurship, and it caused me to literally stop at NOTHING until I made it. I wasn’t willing to take shit from a new ‘jerk of a boss’ and I wasn’t willing to go work at a job that I hated because I knew there was something out there better than that.
Here’s my point: taking shit is NOT the key to success, (obviously) by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, taking shit from your boss (or from ANYONE) for that matter, only really suppresses your own creative spirit and blocks your potential to be who you really want to become. (If you want to become an entrepreneur, that is…if you want to have a J.O.B forever, then by all means: take shit!)
Now, as a disclaimer, telling your boss to ‘screw off’ probably isn’t a good idea either if you’re not in a stage of your home business where you’re making a full-time income to support yourself yet. However, if you can simply get your mind to ‘shift’ from – either (1) – being OK that you’re being shat on, or (2) being angry that your boss is giving you shit, to: “I’m so glad I’m only going to have to take this shit for a short while longer – soon my business will be able to support me without this stupid job.” It changes the entire outcome in your mind from something negative, to something that will motivate you and DRIVE you to build your business stronger, longer and FASTER to the point that you’ll stop at nothing until you make it. And, THAT is precisely the mindset that you want to have when building your business.
